What happens to your hair after it’s swept off the salon floor? At Haringtons, the answer is far more inspiring than landfill. In a bold step toward a greener future, Haringtons is proud to announce the success of its ongoing sustainability initiative in partnership with Green Salon Collective. Since launching the programme, the salon has recycled an impressive 2.2 tonnes of waste, including hair and other salon waste transforming materials that would otherwise end up in landfill into valuable resources, and preventing over 717kg of CO₂ from entering the atmosphere.

Turning Waste into Resources 💚

Green Salon Collective is transforming the way the salon industry manages waste. Materials that would traditionally be discarded are instead collected, repurposed, and given a second life.

One of the most innovative initiatives is hair recycling, with clippings repurposed in a variety of ways—including hair booms that absorb oil spills and protect marine ecosystems, hair felt used in gardening and agriculture to support plant growth, retain moisture, and enrich soil naturally, and even applications in fashion and textiles, demonstrating just how versatile this material can be.

Foils and colour tubes, which are notoriously difficult to recycle, are collected, cleaned, and reprocessed, reducing landfill waste and lowering carbon emissions. Green Salon Collective also ensures chemical waste is safely managed, with leftover hair products such as colour and bleach disposed of responsibly to protect local waterways and soil. Everyday salon plastics are sorted and transformed into new products rather than being incinerated or discarded, creating a closed-loop system that supports a more sustainable salon industry.

Haringtons’ commitment to sustainability is powered by client participation. A small £2 green fee per appointment funds these recycling and repurposing programmes. In December alone, the salon recycled 2,238.67kg of waste, demonstrating the tangible impact of each visit.
